Katie G. Nelson
Katie G. Nelson is a freelance journalist, photographer and filmmaker in Nairobi, Kenya. She covers human rights, global health and accountability issues in the region.
Trained as an investigative journalist, Nelson cut her teeth as a reporter in the United States before moving to East Africa, where she is now based. Her print, photography and video work has been published by National Geographic, Al Jazeera and Associated Press, among others.
In addition to news coverage, Nelson often partners with nonprofit organizations to humanize their work by providing visual content and hands-on storytelling training with their staff. Clients include Oxfam, Population Services International and USAID.
Nelson’s work — and life — is centered around her insatiable wanderlust, genuine curiosity and desire to connect seemingly disparate experiences into a collective sense of humanity. She believes her life’s meaning is to bear witness to those who have been silenced and to find strength in the stories of those who remain.
